I love that word. I like the way it sounds, and the way it feels. To say it…to be it.

What does it mean, though? Empower? Some of the words to define it include: authorized / allow / permit /Enable / Inspire / Embolden!

We usually talk about empowering others. Empowering our people, our employees, our kids.

But how about empowering ourselves?

Bosses, managers, parents, and people in legitimate authority seemingly have the ability to transfer or allow us to have power. And sometimes they allow us and sometimes they don’t. And sometimes when they do allow us, it’s reluctantly, right?

I don’t know about you, but I want to feel enabled and inspired and emboldened! But I don’t necessarily want someone’s permission to feel that way.

So I think we can and should empower ourselves. And we can do that

with knowledge and with confidence. Let’s allow ourselves to be inspired to do what we want to do.

But Wait – what exactly is that?

  • What do we want to do?

  • What do we want to be?

  • What are we good at?

  • What is our purpose in life?

  • What should we be doing?

These are big questions. And I think we need to seek the answers to them, and not wait for someone else to tell us or permit us.

So let’s start with figuring out some things about us. Like what are we good at?

For example, I know that I can be creative, and I have been told that I am good at coaching people. And I would like to think I am a subject matter expert at some things (that I have worked on for years) – like Communication and the MBTI and shoe collecting. I discovered some of this through experience, trial and error, feedback and doing some self-assessment and reflection.

Assessments can be particularly helpful as we Discover our strengths and Empower ourselves! Here are some of my personal / professional favorites:

  • Strengths-Finder 2.0

  • TalentSmart’s Emotional Intelligence

  • 360 Feedback

  • MBTI (Myers Briggs Type Indicator)

These are great assessments to help us figure out what we’re good at, what we like to do, what gives us energy and perhaps guide us on what we want to do in life.

The MBTI – is one of the most researched and globally used assessments. And it can be very helpful to help us help us (yes – I meant to say that twice). And then to help us help others – as parents, professors, coaches, managers,

Empowerment to me means that I am OK about going forward with a plan or a goal or an activity, or embarking on a journey. And that I feel good and confident and maybe even excited and inspired.

So don’t wait for someone else to empower you. Figure you out and Allow you to Empower You. Go!
